Conscious Cruelty

Two-screen video work, DV, looped, colour, 2017, collab. with Ruvi Simmons.

In one half, Shirin is seated at an outdoor cafe table in Porto forcing herself to eat as much as she can of an entire orange spongecake.

In the other, Ruvi stands on a desolate patch of ground removing one item of clothing each time Shirin (offscreen) calls from an alphabetised list of personally inspirational artist-names. He is naked before the alphabet is complete and so he has to stand in the freezing cold while the ritual is completed.

The videos are not of equal length but they are started at the same time, find new relations with each other as they loop at different points of beginning or end.

The works speaks of our relationship to artistic creation, ourselves, and each other. Inspiration and torture, influence and awful, sustenance and sickness, become the syncopated rhythms of an endless travail. Rules and regulations, and failure as artist´s practice.
